The days spent at the hospital were both personally and clinically rewarding. It felt great to be able to provide free dental hygiene treatment to those who need it most, and the challenging cases really helped me realize that I still needed to work on my detection and debridement skills in order to be a successful hygienist.
As the days went on, I was feeling more and more confident and completing treatment in the same day on patients who I would normally see 3 or 4 times at the Camosun clinic. Working in make-shift operatories and in ergonomically compromising positions has been tough, but I am still happy that we can provide treatment, even though it means the patient is sitting in a lounge chair for hours and I'm learning how to do stand up dentistry!
